Mohammed Shami’s return to the national team has been supported by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who claims that there is no reason why the Bengal bowler shouldn’t be selected. Sourav Ganguly gave Shami high marks for his recent performance, pointing out that the seasoned seamer is healthy and bowling very effectively in domestic cricket.
Since his final Champions Trophy appearance in 2025, Shami has not been included in the Indian squad in any of the forms. Despite his impressive exploits in the Ranji Trophy, the 35-year-old was left out of the forthcoming Test series against South Africa, which begins Friday at the Eden Gardens.
Shami had said in public that he was healthy and ready to play after being passed over for the West Indies Tests. He has already claimed 15 wickets in Bengal’s opening two games of the current Ranji season, helping them win back-to-back games before going wicketless against Tripura. He has bowled 91 overs in three games, demonstrating his endurance.
“Shami is bowling quite good right now. He has won Bengal by himself in the three Ranji Trophy matches, demonstrating his fitness. The selectors are undoubtedly keeping an eye on things and communicating with Muhammad Shami. But in my opinion, it’s the Mohammad Shami we are familiar with in terms of technique and fitness. Therefore, I don’t see any reason why he can’t continue to play for India in Test matches, One-Day Cricket, and T20 Cricket.
According to Sourav Ganguly, who was cited by The Indian Express, “because that skill is enormous.”
After the 2023 World Cup, where he took an incredible 24 wickets at an average of 10.70 to become the tournament’s top wicket-taker, the seasoned bowler had ankle surgery. His outstanding performance was crucial to India’s successful campaign. Shami recently addressed the continuing selection debate after his game-winning 5/38 performance helped Bengal win the Ranji Trophy by 141 runs.
Yes, I was aware that this question would arise. In any case, I’m always in the news. I’m already the villain because of you people! What else am I able to say or do? Social media has twisted everything in the modern world. It’s my responsibility to do well. I’ll do my best wherever I get the chance. God will decide the rest. I’m from Bengal. For me, every Bengal game is like a memory,” Shami remarked.
