On Wednesday, May 7, Rohit Sharma announced on Instagram that his stellar Test career was coming to an end. Twelve of the 24 Test matches he led saw victory for the Asian powerhouses. India advanced to the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) finals under his wise leadership. The Nagpur native also guided India to the 2024 Champions Trophy and 2024 T20 World Cup championships, but he has no immediate plans to let up on the ODI format.
When Rohit was named the Men in Blue’s all-format captain, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stated that he was confident the opening batsman would succeed in the position. Highlighting some of Rohit’s incredible accomplishments as captain, the Prince of Bengal expressed his warmest regards.
“He is a wonderful player for India, but the game needs someone to step aside. I wish him well. He had a successful career and will play in the IPL and for India one day. The player is supported by BCCI. We believed he would be an excellent captain for India while I was a member of the BCCI, and he was. India Today cited Sourav Ganguly as saying, “Under him, we won the World Cup, the Champion’s trophy, and Test cricket.”
In November 2013, Rohit Sharma played his first Test match against the West Indies.
In December 2024, he made his final appearance in the longest format during the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia. At an average of 40.58, the 38-year-old concluded with 4,301 runs from 67 Test matches. His international red-ball career included 12 tonnes and 18 fifties.
Rohit will continue to play in the ODI format after retiring from T20I cricket last year. In a recent interview, Dinesh Lad, his childhood coach, stated that the right-handed batter’s goal is to lead India to victory in the 2027 ODI World Cup before he retires.
In the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Rohit has been playing well. From 11 games, the Mumbai Indians batsman has amassed 300 runs at a strike rate of 152.29 and an average of 30. To date, he has recorded three half-centuries.
