Sourav Ganguly: 'I am all for the Impact Player' but wants a small instruction change

The revolutionary Impact Player rule has completely altered the Indian Premier League’s organizational structure. This rule, which was introduced in 2023, has proven to be a valuable resource for teams, enabling them to strategically use it in a range of circumstances. The rule has proven to be a significant benefit, adding to the tactical depth of the game, whether it is being used to bring in an explosive batsman to destroy the opposition with powerful knocks or another bowler to change the game’s complexion by taking key wickets and limiting runs.

Super overs have surprisingly not been played in the IPL in either of the two seasons since the rule’s adoption. What was even more astonishing was the remarkable eight times that 250 or more scores were accumulated.

Speaking to the media on the fringes of the Blue Ocean Corporation’s International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference, former Indian cricketer and Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly endorsed the Impact Player rule, highlighting how it increased the tournament’s grandeur and excitement. The impact player for each team should be announced before the toss, which he proposed as a little change to the tournament’s rules. With this adjustment, the game would become more analytical and captivating while also adding a strategic element that would force teams to prepare more carefully.

“I like the Impact Player rule. “It’s an excellent competition. There is a little bit of skill involved because the Impact Player only allows you to make decisions before the toss. Thus, it will take a lot of talent and strategy to have the impact player disclosed beforehand. However, Sourav Ganguly said, “I am all for the impact player,” speaking to the media outside of the Blue Ocean Corporation’s International Procurement and Supply Chain Workshop.

Sourav Ganguly is confident despite a number of players voicing their disapproval of the Impact Player rule, especially given the declining importance of all-rounders as teams choose specialised batsmen and bowlers. He thinks the Impact Player rule is a ground-breaking invention that will take the IPL to new heights by increasing its strategic complexity and intensity.
