Shubman Gill will captain an inexperienced Indian squad in a five-match Test series against England commencing on Friday, June 20. Following 32 Tests, the Punjab hitter has averaged 35.06, underperforming in red-ball cricket. His England Test average is 14.66 from six innings.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly wished the 25-year-old luck ahead of the highly anticipated Test series and reminded him that English balls will swing, so hitting over the line won’t be ideal.
“Good luck to him. I believe he can improve his Test batting. He bats top-order “Ganguly told Revsportz.
“You can’t just hit through the queue here. The new ball will seam and swing differently. When India is 10 for 2, he may have to play the new ball, thus the application will be different “said.
Ganguly also advised Shubman Gill to improve his moving ball defence and leave deliveries outside the off-stump.
“Shubman Gill has to score more runs in seaming, swinging conditions. It will be tricky with the new ball first. Batting at 100 for 2 and 20 for 4 are different, thus he must improve his defence and leave deliveries outside the off stump “said.
India will trip for the first time since Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin retired. Ashwin departed midway through the Border-Gavaskar series, while Rohit and Kohli retired on May 7 and 12, respectively.
Former BCCI president Ganguly said it’s remarkable how rapidly things change.
“There is no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no Ajinkya Rahane… it’s absolutely amazing – how things change over a period is unbelievable,” he remarked.
Leeds’ Headingley will host the first Test. To prepare for the Three Lions Tests, the Indian team is playing an intra-squad game in Kent.
