Ecclestone returns, England choose to bowl vs South Africa

After bowling four balls in Match 27 of the Women’s World Cup 2025 against New Zealand on Sunday, October 26, Sophie Ecclestone did not return.

After dismissing Brooke Halliday on her fourth ball, Sophie Ecclestone left with the team physio.

England Cricket announced that the left-arm spinner left the field as a precautionary measure since the match against the White Ferns is a dead rubber and England has a semi-final against South Africa on Wednesday, October 29.

After landing awkwardly on her left shoulder in the field in the first over, Sophie Ecclestone experienced more discomfort while bowling and is now receiving treatment.

The battle began with Sophie Ecclestone sprawling across the pitch and throwing herself about twice, falling awkwardly on her left shoulder and knees. Following the end of the first over, the 26-year-old left the field. At the beginning of the 18th over, she was back on the field.

Although she was added to the attack in the twenty-third over, she didn’t appear to be in the best of rhythms as she ran in and finished her follow-through. She did, however, succeed in dismissing Halliday for 4 off 14.

In her stead, Sophia Dunkley bowled a couple of dot balls to end the over. Ultimately, Dunkley bowled 14 runs in 2.2 overs as New Zealand was dismissed for 168 in 38.2 overs. At 9.2 overs, Linsey Smith (3/30) was the best of the bunch for England. The top scoring for the unit led by Sophie Devine was Georgia Plimmer (43 off 57). Only 23 out of 35 could be scored by Devine, who is playing her 159th and final ODI.
