Smith, Starc eye BBL comeback post-Ashes

The Australian Test players are expected to make a comeback to the Big Bash League following a resounding 4-1 series victory in the Ashes 2025–26. The Ashes heroes, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne, among others, have confirmed their availability, according to Cricket Australia.

However, Mitchell Starc, who will be wearing the Magenta jersey for the Sydney Sixers after an 11-year hiatus, is receiving a lot of attention. The left-arm bowler, who also took home the Ashes Player of the Series trophy, stated that he is committed to playing for the Sydney Sixers and is not too far away. He’ll be accessible starting on January 16.

“I’m definitely not planning for the next two years just yet. I’ll pull on the magenta with Steve Smith, the man sitting next to me. We’ll try to assist (the Sixers) in making it to another championship game.

Speaking at a press conference, Starc stated, “I haven’t got many plans other than the BBL other than a little golf.”

In addition to Starc, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja, who recently retired, will join the Brisbane Heat on January 10. Along with spinner Todd Murphey, Steve Smith, who captained Australia when Pat Cummins was not available, will join the Sydney-based squad on January 11.

Head will give the T20 World Cup priority.

Travis Head will not participate in the league because selectors are eager to manage his calendar following a demanding international schedule, even though other test stars are joining the BBL. With 629 runs at an average of 62.9, the southpaw had an incredible Ashes.

Cameroon Green, who does not currently have a BBL deal, will also be unavailable. On February 11, Australia will take on Ireland in the opening game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
