The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee declared on Saturday, May 24, that ace batsman Shubman Gill will be captaining the Indian side in Test cricket from now on. This was a historic announcement. In addition to being a new beginning for the nation in red-ball cricket, Gill’s first task would be a highly-staked five-match tour to England, which would also mark the start of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Given the seriousness of playing the game for India, playing Test matches for an extended length of time is an even greater challenge. Shubman Gill has stated that he is honoured to have the chance to wear the captain’s blazer for the Indian team as the replacement for Rohit Sharma, who had a brief but rather successful tenure as Test captain.
“Anyone who begins playing cricket as a young child aspires to represent India. For a very long time, India has played Test cricket in addition to regular cricket.
“It is a huge honour and a big responsibility to be able to get this opportunity,” Shubman Gill told BCCI.
In the IPL 2025, the Punjabi-born captain of the Gujarat Titans has been dominating both as a leader and as an individual. While the Titans are leading the points table and have already earned a spot in the playoffs, he is one of the tournament’s top run scorers. After the major competition is over, Shubman Gill will be concentrating on leading the 18-man Indian team on a tour of the United Kingdom from mid-June to early August.
