Since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013 under the direction of MS Dhoni, they haven’t won an ICC title in ten years.
Team India lost by a huge 209 runs to Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021–23 final, which just ended at the Oval in London. Team India lost the WTC final, which was yet another heartbreak.
So, let’s look at what has happened to Team India since they last won an ICC event in 2013. The Men in Blue played in the T20 World Cup in 2014 and made it to the finals, where they played Sri Lanka. But in the final match, the Lankan Lions showed that they were the best team and won by six wickets in a low-scoring game.
The next year, Australia and New Zealand held the 2015 ODI World Cup, where India could try to defend their title. The MS Dhoni-led Indian team lost to the Australians in the semifinals, and the Australians went on to win the championship.
The team lost both the 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cups. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, they went out of the ICC tournaments in the semi-finals. Team India went up against Pakistan at the Oval in London as they tried to protect their Champions Trophy title in 2017. Kohli was in charge of India.
But the Men in Green completely crushed the Indian team and won the game easily by a huge 180 runs. As the 2019 ODI World Cup got closer, India was one of the favourites to win. It was also the last World Cup under the direction of the legendary MS Dhoni, which happened at the same time.
Even though they beat the Kiwis and made it to the semi-finals, their wait for an ICC title got longer because of that loss. With the addition of the ICC WTC for the red-ball version, India dominated the 2019–21 cycle and earned their spot in the final match, where they will face the BlackCaps for the third time.
Even though Team India had a great two-year run under Kohli, they didn’t rise to the moment and win the coveted trophy in 2021. In the same way, another loss in the WTC period of 2021–2023 has made it ten years since they won an ICC title. But the Men in Blue will try to put together a strong team just in time for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will be held in their home country. They hope to win their first title in almost a decade.
