'He has a future after he is done playing cricket in stand-up comedy'- Simon Katich takes a dig at Rohit Sharma

Rumours of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli‘s retirement began to circulate after their performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024–25), marking the end of the Indian team’s ten-year domination against Australia in Test cricket. Notably, the Australians won the New Year’s Test in Sydney, securing a 3-1 series victory.

Rohit Sharma’s decision to withdraw from the fifth Test match because of his awful batting performances was one of the most significant. This caused some to doubt his future in the game, but he stated in a post-match interview that he will still play a part. In response to Rohit Sharma’s interview, former Australian cricketer and commentator Simon Katich made a light-hearted jab at the India captain, stating that he has a bright future in stand-up comedy. He also discussed the challenges he may encounter in the upcoming June England Test series.

“Well, the numbers are devastating if you look at them. In this test, we witnessed it. In that interview, he was quite articulate and altruistic in choosing not to take the test. His humour was excellent, so there’s no question that he has a career in stand-up comedy after he finishes playing cricket, Katich said on Star Sports.

“At 37, only he knows if he still has the motivation and appetite to go again. The series won’t be easy for England because they are improving. Some talented young quicks are emerging. Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are doing well. First and foremost, Katich continued, “I dare say that if he chooses to go on it and the Indian selectors pick him, that will be a tough tour.”

Against Australia, Rohit Sharma had a forgettable BGT 2024–25 batting performance.

In the meantime, Rohit Sharma, the usual captain of the Indian Test team, had a really bad series in Australia. The top opener for Team India only scored 31 runs in the three games of the BGT 2024–25 Test series. He scored with a pitiful average of just 6.20 while leading the club. The poorest average for a Test skipper on tour in Australia was noteworthy as well.
