Shukri Conrad will take over as head coach of South Africa’s men’s teams in all formats on Friday, May 9, according to confirmation from Cricket South Africa (CSA). Conrad was already the coach of the Test team, and it was under his guidance that South Africa advanced to the World Test Championship final in the 2023–25 cycle.
Rob Walter resigns, at the end of the previous month, and Conrad takes his position. According to reports, Conrad, a former Proteas player, would serve as manager until the 2027 World Cup, which South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will co-host.
Conrad talked about his feelings about being hired as the all-format coach and how excited he was to work with the group of up-and-coming players and seasoned pros.
“The greatest honour of my cricket career has been coaching the Test squad, therefore it is very extraordinary to now be in charge of the white-ball teams as well. The opportunities that lie ahead truly thrill me. From the level of our senior players to the next generation of juniors hoping to play for the Proteas, South African cricket boasts amazing white-ball ability. Conrad was cited by Cricbuzz as saying, “There’s a solid foundation to build on, and I think we have what it takes to achieve something special.”
He also noted that his team has a busy cricket schedule with important international competitions on the horizon. With the WTC final next month, the T20 World Cup the following year, and our very own 50-over World Cup the year after, we have a full calendar.
Planning will be crucial for us at this time as we try to control our player pool so that the best teams can be played in every format,” Shukri Conrad continued.
When the Temba Bavuma-led team plays Australia in the 2023–25 World Telecommunications Cup final at Lord’s next month, South Africa has an opportunity to write history. With eight victories in 12 games and a points percentage of 69.44%, the Proteas ultimately took the top spot in the standings.
