‘Yes, I’ve not been up to my own expectations.’ Shubman Gill provides honest opinion on test performances

"With more T20 and playing on batting-friendly tracks in the white ball, I feel it takes away a little from your defensive game over a period of time," added Gill.

'Yes, I've not been up to my own expectations.' Shubman Gill provides honest opinion on test performances

Although Shubman Gill has established himself as one of India’s batting mainstays in One-Day International cricket, his results in both the longest and shortest versions of the game have not yet fully reflected his ability. The Punjab batsman is confident that he can improve throughout the ten Test matches that India will play in the coming months, while conceding his shortcomings in the format.

After a rough start to the five-match Test series against England earlier this year, Gill recovered well to end as the second-highest run scorer with 452 runs from five games. In India’s impending red-ball matches against Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, the right-handed batter is motivated to perform well.

During the England series, Shubman Gill claimed to have focused mostly on his defence against the spinners, saying he had worked hard at it.

“[In Test cricket], I haven’t performed up to my own standards, yes. But all ten of the tests are coming up at once. Gill was reported by India Today on the eve of the Duleep Trophy opening round matches, saying, “Hopefully, after these ten Tests end, I’d be up to my expectations or more.”

“I made a slight improvement to my defence, particularly against the spinners. You should be able to defend much more when playing on turning tracks. You then engage in scoring shots. In my opinion, playing on batting-friendly white ball tracks and participating in more Twenty Twenty takes a toll on your defensive skills over time. That’s why I concentrated on it during the England series,” he said.

With an average of 35.52, the 24-year-old has amassed 1,492 runs at an average of 35.52 in 25 Test matches thus far for the Asian heavyweights. Throughout his red-ball career for India, he has amassed four tonnes of wickets and six half-centuries. In the Duleep Trophy, Gill will captain India A. On Thursday, September 5, they are scheduled to play India B in Bengaluru to start their campaign.
