When the BCCI revealed the Indian team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, Shubman Gill was conspicuously missing. But he had to give way to the in-form Ishan Kishan after a run of poor performances.
Shubman Gill was supported by the T20I selectors and team management, according to Gujarat Titans head coach Parthiv Patel, since they wanted a reliable player who could captain the side in all formats. In Tests and ODIs, the hitter from Punjab is already leading India. But the former India wicketkeeper pointed out that even though Gill had plenty of chances, he didn’t perform up to par.
Shubman Gill was India’s deputy captain in the shortest format not too long ago.
“India wanted to choose a reliable player who could serve as captain across all three formats. A fair chance was provided to him. Perhaps his contribution fell short of what was expected of him. The New Zealand series has five games remaining. The decision, in my opinion, was made during the South Africa series.
There will always be discussion over who isn’t on the squad because there is so much talent available right now. Rather, I believe that we should support and encourage those who are present. On Jay Thadeshwar’s podcast, he stated, “India will undoubtedly start as favourites because it is a very strong squad.”
Patel, who keeps a close eye on local cricket, expressed his admiration for the quantity of gifted players in the nation. He predicted that the Men in Blue would win more ICC titles and rule international cricket in the years to come.
“Given India’s talent, I would be shocked if they didn’t take home 75% of the ICC trophies. The most crucial aspect is how the participants are playing and how the system functions. India will undoubtedly win ICC trophies in the future, in my opinion. Given everything, the domestic system in the BCCI’s COE will allow us to dominate world cricket for many years to come,” he thought.
