The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to former Indian cricket player Mohammad Kaif, has hurried Shubman Gill into too many leadership positions. Following his tenure as Test captain, Gill was recently appointed captain of India’s 50-over team.
Kaif stated that although he expected the change following the 2027 World Cup, the decision was not surprising. He also voiced concern about how Shubman Gill batting performance would be affected by the additional burden.
Although this was expected, I thought it would occur following the 2027 World Cup. The man is good, and he has improved his physical condition. He had a good chance of participating in the World Cup in 2027. However, Shubman Gill is left to bear the burden. He’s rushing through everything. And it might backfire. In a video posted to his YouTube page, Kaif said, “When you get so much responsibility in such a short time, it could affect performance.”
Kaif also acknowledged that Shubman Gill might have mental strain from carrying an additional burden.
The selection committee, which included Shubman Gill old teammate Ajit Agarkar, might have forced Gill to take on the position of ODI captain, he said.
Here’s what I’m trying to say: Don’t beat him up. When Suryakumar Yadav steps down, he will take over as captain of the Test team, bat at number four, and was named vice-captain of the Asia Cup. He is now the ODI captain thanks to you. It seems like everything is getting done quickly. Captaincy is never requested by a player. Everyone is aware that he didn’t want it. Although you can’t force it, he appears to be well-liked by everyone and is seen as a future captain. Ajit Agarkar and the other selectors have put pressure on him,” he continued.
In the two-match series that India is currently playing against the West Indies, Gill is in the lead. He will be leading Australia Down Under in the ODI setup following the West Indies series. The three ODIs will start with the first one on Sunday, October 19.
