The Indian captain added that because the team is young, they will be able to strengthen the areas in which they were lacking.

Shubman Gill Points to Tail-End Batting and Missed Catches as Reasons for India’s Defeat at Headingley

Following the heartbreaking defeat, in which England won with a record-breaking 352 on day five—the most by any team in 77 years—captain Shubman Gill blamed India’s lower-order errors and missed catches. India was in a commanding position for much of the game, but they lost by five wickets in the first Test of the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar tournament.

It was an outstanding Test match, in my opinion. Shubman Gill commented on the collapses of 41/7 and 31/6 in the two innings and the numerous missed opportunities, saying, “I’m proud of the team and overall a good effort. We had our chances, we dropped catches, and our lower-order didn’t contribute enough.” He did add, though, that the team is young and will improve with time.

“We were considering declaring at about 430 yesterday [day four].” Sadly, we failed to score runs at the end, which always makes things challenging. This contest just didn’t go our way. We spoke our opinions about that. It went by so fast. In the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill remarked, “It might be one of those things we have to fix in the next matches.”

“With wickets like these, chances are definitely not easy to come by. We’re a young team that is still learning, but perhaps we can get better at those things. We were really accurate in the first session, giving away very few runs. Once the ball softens, it becomes difficult to halt the runs. Unfortunately, we didn’t get all the corners we wanted. When the ball grew stale, they took a chance. That occurs during a cricket match. You anticipate that things won’t always go your way.

Furthermore, he responded that they would make a decision before the next Test at Edgbaston when asked if India had already chosen which Tests Jasprit Bumrah would play in.

“Game by game is absolutely more important. We’ll see when the game is near,”Shubman Gill continued.
