When Shubman Gill looked to have a neck injury during the first Test match against South Africa in Kolkata, he was only three balls into his innings and had to leave the pitch to get medical attention. India concluded their first innings at 189, 30 runs ahead of South Africa, and he did not bat.
Shubman Gill is under observation by the BCCI medical staff due to a neck spasm. The BCCI said in a statement following the day’s first play session that a decision about his participation would be made based on his progress.
Shubman Gill slog-swept Simon Harmer for four over square leg when he faced his third delivery, bringing India to 75 for 2. He removed his helmet, rubbed the back of his neck, and displayed obvious signs of agony when he stood up after finishing the shot.
Shubman Gill continued to rub his neck as the physio left, but he was swiftly removed.
The crowd that had roared him in moments before was disappointed when Gill hobbled slowly away and went straight into the locker room for treatment.
Prior to play beginning, footage from the live broadcast shortly after the incident showed Gill stretching and telling support personnel that he was experiencing some neck pain. On the broadcast, Murali Kartik stated, “It appears that he had this since the morning.” “You can see him trying to make sure it [the neck] was nice and supple.”
After Rishabh Pant stepped out to take his place, India had lunch at 138 for 4. After the interval, Harmer took 4 for 30 and Marco Jansen returned 3 for 35 as the wickets fell in quick succession. India had a slim advantage at the end of the first innings, with Axar Patel being the final hitter to fall.
