Shubman Gill on Mental Focus: Advice to Hong Kong Ahead of Asia Cup

Shubman Gill, India’s T20I vice-captain, interrupted a training session to talk to Hong Kong cricket players and answer their batting-related questions. Shubman Gill amazing gesture was captured on tape, and admirers all around the world have since expressed their love for it.

The Hong Kong team’s official social media account posted a video that went viral, showing Shubman describing how to improve as a batsman against short-pitched bowling. In order to practise playing short deliveries, the Punjabi batter encouraged the Hong Kong batters to participate in as many training sessions as possible.

Playing short balls will become muscle memory as the quantity of repetition increases, according to Shubman Gill, and the batters won’t have to make as many decisions on their own.

“Practice a lot; you won’t need to worry about it too much as you practice. Playing the drive is not something you consider. You are prepared to play when the ball arrives. Because you have practiced facing short balls one, ten, and ten thousand times and played the identical stroke, your eyes are able to comprehend when you play short balls. Give the body control. It will get worse the more you think about it.

Try not to think too much. We keep talking about being in the zone and hitting well. Which zone is it? When asked by the Hong Kong players how to get better at batting against short balls, Shubman Gill responded, “It is when a batter is less thinking and is just reacting to the ball coming in.”

Early in his career, the Indian Test skipper also disclosed that he played a lot with plastic balls. The Hong Kong players will undoubtedly benefit from these pointers as they use the 2025 Asia Cup as a chance to improve.

In India’s Asia Cup opener against the United Arab Emirates, Gill scored an undefeated 20 off just nine balls. On Sunday, September 14, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, he will play a crucial part in the high-stakes match against Pakistan.
