After Rohit Sharma retires from the Indian Test team, young batsman Shubman Gill is expected to assume the captaincy responsibilities. Gill is the front-runner to captain the Indian team for the five-match Test series against England, according to sources, which will be revealed by the third week of May.
There is a leadership vacancy as a result of Rohit’s announcement to leave Test cricket. Although Jasprit Bumrah, an excellent bowler, led during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia as vice-captain and replaced Rohit, his injury worries have disqualified him from consideration for a permanent leadership position.
According to a BCCI source cited by NDTV, “there is no point offering him vice-captaincy if Bumrah isn’t the captain.”
The obvious pick for Ajit Agarkar’s committee appears to be Shubman Gill: Source
Virat Kohli, a batting mainstay, has reportedly told the board that he has decided to retire from Test cricket as well, only days after Rohit announced his abrupt retirement. The 36-year-old has been invited to reconsider by the board, but no formal announcement has been made.
“It’s true that the selectors considered choosing Kohli to lead India in the England series. This would have given Gill more time to develop into a leader, but he is still in his prime at the age of 25 and a half. According to a source, Gill appears to be the clear pick for Ajit Agarkar’s committee because of Bumrah’s fitness concerns.
Given these considerations, Shubman Gill’s elevation is imminent. Gill has led Gujarat Titans in the IPL and captained India in five Twenty20 Internationals during the 2024 Zimbabwe trip, despite never having led in an ODI or Test match. The right-handed batsman has amassed 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 in 32 Test matches, including five hundreds. The new vice-captain, however, is expected to be Rishabh Pant. On June 20, India’s next World Test Championship cycle will commence with the start of the five-Test series in England at Headingley.
