Shubman Gill Doubtful for Guwahati Test; Final Call Later

Shubman Gill, the captain of India, was asked not to go to Guwahati for the second Test match against South Africa. This means that before the One-Day Internationals, the star cricket player should be returning home or to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for additional rehabilitation. Shubman Gill has however chosen to remain with the Indian outfit in order to maintain a positive team atmosphere.

In case you missed it, on the first day of the first Test at Eden Gardens, Gill was forced to leave the crease halfway through his innings due to severe neck stiffness on the third and final ball of his time in the middle. He had treatment at Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata and fared well. On November 21, the BCCI will make a decision regarding his participation in the second Test.

“Shubman Gill was released the following day after being placed under observation.

Shubman Gill has been responding favourably to the medical care he has received, and on November 19, 2025, he will go to Guwahati with the team. The BCCI medical staff will continue to monitor him, and a decision regarding his participation in the second test will be made in accordance with that, according to the official board statement released on Wednesday, November 19.

The Fazilka-born player is still recovering from his injury, according to Shubman Gill, who is being monitored by the medical staff. The team management is not making any rash decisions on Gill’s availability for the match, which starts on November 22. India’s only hope to avoid another Test thumping at home is to win in Guwahati, as they are currently behind 0-1 in the two-match series.

If Gill is unable to play in the forthcoming match, another question that has emerged is who would take his spot at No. 4. Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal are already members of the Indian team. However, players who are playing well in the Ranji Trophy 2025–2026, such Karun Nair, might also be called up, and Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar have a decent chance as well.
