During the just finished press conference at the Board of Control for Cricket in India headquarters, Shubman Gill, the recently appointed Test captain, discussed a variety of subjects related to the forthcoming Test series in England.
Shubman Gill acknowledged that when he first learnt of his batting position and captaincy assignment in the Test team, he felt completely overwhelmed. He also discussed how he would like to guide the players under his direction.
“(On his batting position) I was blown away when I initially learnt. However, it comes with a lot of responsibilities. eager to take on this challenge. We play an intra-squad game, have a 10-day camp, and have some time to choose the batting position,” Shubman Gill stated during the press conference.
“I don’t have a specific style in mind for his captaincy. You continue to build these things as you play. I enjoy interacting with the players. I would make an effort to make them feel at ease with their advantages and disadvantages. Only when the players feel safe can they perform well,” he continued.
They would be under pressure if we were proactive with our plans: Shubman Gill
Overemphasising on numbers was dismissed by the top-order batter. He also discussed the team’s mental health following the return of veteran Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“I really want to set an example,” he said, citing his statistics in England. That being said, I don’t rely on averages or statistics. They have a certain style of play (based on his Bazball numbers). For us, it is thrilling. They would be under pressure if we were proactive with our plans, which is a huge obstacle. (Regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirement) Every tour has strain. It is difficult to fill the void left by the two major characters who have been with us for so long. However, that isn’t an additional load. By now, we’re all accustomed to that,” Gill said.
On June 20, Team India will play England in a much-awaited series. It will be interesting to observe Gill’s leadership of the team under trying circumstances. In England, his own stats are not that high. He has only managed to score 88 runs at an average of 14.66 in the six innings.
