Shreyas Iyer will not be included in India's Test team, BCCI official confirmed

The career of prominent Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer in Test cricket has taken a dramatic turn, as his future in the Indian Test team appears to be in jeopardy due to his recent underwhelming performances. His future in a particular version of the game seemed uncertain after his stunning debut against New Zealand in Kanpur three years ago.

Shreyas Iyer has clearly struggled with the longer format, especially when dealing with overseas supplies that come in short bursts. His struggles have also been felt at home, as he has only scored 146 runs in eight innings in India during the previous two years.

“Shreyas Iyer might be on the Mumbai team for the Irani Cup, which gets underway in Lucknow on October 1st

He had the chance to earn a spot in the Test team in the 2024 Duleep Trophy, but his performance as captain of India D was below par as he scored just 104 runs in four innings. Iyer’s chances of passing the test were harshly critiqued by a BCCI representative.

“Shreyas does not currently have a spot in the Test team. Who is he going to replace? In addition, his choice of shots has raised questions in Duleep, particularly yesterday (Sunday). He played a brilliant shot (off left-arm spinner Shams Mulani) while perfectly poised. You have to take full use of the opportunity to bat on a flat deck once you are set, a BCCI executive told The Telegraph.

If he doesn’t fire in Irani too, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs: BCCI official

Iyer’s path ahead seems difficult, with little chances to establish his value. Another BCCI official expressed misgivings about Iyer’s selection in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, despite the fact that he still has an opportunity to redeem himself in the Duleep Trophy final round and the forthcoming Irani Cup.

He may still play for Irani and be available from the second T20I onwards, even if he is selected for the Bangladesh T20Is (starting on October 6),” the man stated.

The official mentioned Iyer’s injury setback and his recent impressive performance in the ODI World Cup, recommending that these facts be taken into account.

“Now, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs if he doesn’t shoot in Irani too. He was hitting so good in the ODI World Cup of last year not too long ago. It is important to take into account that he was also injured. And in Duleep, there’s still one round left, so you never know when he might score a hundred. He must get back into shape. One cannot just ignore his runs at home, but it is unlikely that he would travel to Australia due to his issues with the short ball,” stated another BCCI official.
