At a press conference on May 24, chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed Team India’s lineup for the forthcoming five-match Test series. To everyone’s amazement, Shreyas Iyer was left out of the 18-member squad when he read out their names. Rishabh Pant was picked as the new captain, and young top-order batsman Shubman Gill was named as his deputy.
Agarkar responded that “there’s no room for the player in Test cricket” when questioned about Iyer and the rationale behind his omission during the press conference. Shreyas Iyer outstanding performances in both domestic and ODI cricket were discussed by the top selector, who also commended the player for his reliability. After eleven years, he has enabled the Punjab Kings (PBKS), who he presently captains in the IPL, make it to the playoffs.
Shreyas Iyer has scored a great deal of runs during his fantastic domestic cricket season.
During the press conference, Ajit Agarkar stated, “Shreyas had a good one-day series and played well in domestic as well, but right now there’s no room in Test cricket.”
Shardul Thakur and Karun Nair in; Harshit Rana out
India is ready for the start of the five-match Test series against England in June 2025. Since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from Test cricket, the selectors have brought in Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur to give the team the experience they will need in England.
In addition, Harshit Rana was excluded because of his subpar performance in Australia. Seven pacers are in the roster, which will be useful in English circumstances.
