At the historic Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25, during the third and final One-Day International between Australia and India, Shreyas Iyer suffered a left rib cage injury while fielding. The announcement was shared on official social media accounts by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The fact that Shreyas was brought to the hospital for additional testing and examination of his injury was also reported.
The incident occurred in the first innings off the fourth ball of the 34th over. Alex Carey received a delivery from Harshit Rana that was back-of-a-length. Attempting to go over mid-off with his arms, the wicketkeeper-batter ended up slashing high in the air. After running backward point and turning around, Shreyas Iyer made a fantastic jump and held onto the grab, preventing the ball from slipping out entirely.
The Indian team made a significant breakthrough when Shreyas Iyer’ outstanding fielding effort put an end to a 59-run fourth-wicket partnership that was positioning Australia for a thrilling finale. Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer appeared to be in severe discomfort after falling awkwardly. In order to assess the injury, the physio hurried out to the middle. The umpires beckoned for drinks, and Shreyas was removed from the pitch.
It was unclear if Shreyas Iyer would be able to bat. In the eleventh over, India lost captain Shubman Gill, who was chasing a 237-run mark. After partnering with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli led the Men in Blue to victory.
The fourth-ranked hitter for India, Shreyas Iyer, was spared from having to come out.
India won in a mere 38.3 overs. With 13 fours and three sixes in 121 off 125 balls, Rohit was still undefeated. In contrast, Kohli scored seven boundaries in an innings that saw him reach an incredible 74 not out off 81 deliveries.
Australia won the first two ODIs and was already up in the three-match series. But going into the five Twenty20 Internationals, India would feel very confident after their resounding victory in the third ODI.
