Vice captain Shreyas Iyer‘s much-awaited return has also materialised, albeit his involvement is contingent upon obtaining a fitness clearance from the Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru. He will be allowed to play again if the CoE deems him healthy enough.
The eagerly anticipated team for India’s forthcoming One-Day International series against New Zealand was revealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday, January 3. Shubman Gill will lead the Men in Blue in the first game of the three-match series, which will start on January 11 at BCA Stadium in Vadodara.
Iyer may be a late entrant to rejoin the team because he will be undergoing his rehabilitation up to a few days before the first match.
Despite claims to the contrary in the media, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has kept his place in the team. However, Dhruv Jurel has been left behind. Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya have also been left out in order to limit their workload before the forthcoming T20I series and the subsequent T20 World Cup. Both missed the most recent ODI matches against South Africa.
Mohammed Siraj, the team’s most seasoned bowler, will spearhead the attack among the pacers, while Prasidh Krishna is joined by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Indian spinners include Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja. Along with Nitish Kumar Reddy, the only pace-bowling all-rounder in the fifteen, Sundar and Jadeja are both capable batsmen.
