Shreyas Iyer suffers dog bite, cleared to play

Just days before his much-anticipated comeback in the first ODI of the white-ball series against New Zealand, star middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer had an unexpected off-field encounter. A viral video shows the Indian vice-captain mingling with fans at an airport while a dog nearly bit him.

In a viral video, Shreyas Iyer signs autographs as admirers greet him.

He was approached by a supporter with her dog. Shreyas Iyer tried to pet the dog, but it snapped. The batter instantly pulled his hand back to prevent damage and left smiling.

See the video here.

Shreyas Iyer returned to the Indian team after nearly three months out with a spleen injury during last year’s tour of Australia. The BCCI Centre of Excellence medical staff cleared him after proving his match-readiness after recuperation.

The 31-year-old will immediately enter the starting lineup upon his return. He captained Mumbai in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The right-hand hitter scored 82 from 53 balls to win the match against Himachal Pradesh without rust. He scored 45 runs against Punjab, even though Mumbai lost.

India-New Zealand match, Ro-Ko reunion

The hosts will host New Zealand for a three-match ODI series starting January 11. Most of the attention has gone to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, known as RoKo.

Along with the veteran duo, captain Shubman Gill is returning after missing the match against South Africa owing to injury. In his last match, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century, but Iyer is set to bat at No. 4 after Ruturaj Gaikwad left.
