Shreyas Iyer recovering well after injury

Shreyas Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, recently provided a much-needed encouraging update after suffering a severe spleen injury in the third ODI match against Australia in Sydney. After being briefly hospitalized to the intensive care unit following the near-fatal on-field incident, the 30-year-old thanked the supporters for their support and told them that he is making steady progress on his road to recovery.

Experts will keep an eye on Shreyas Iyer development in Sydney and India.

Shreyas Iyer made an incredible diving attempt to remove Alex Carey from Harshit Rana’s bowling, which led to the incident. Even though it appeared like he had made the catch cleanly, Iyer grasped his stomach in pain right away. Following the team physiotherapist’s assistance in getting him off the field, his vital signs rapidly declined, necessitating an immediate hospitalization.

At St. Vincent’s Hospital, follow-up scans showed that he had internal bleeding from a grade-two splenic laceration. His health is stabilized by the Sydney specialists and the Indian team’s medical personnel. Since the cricket player’s blood pressure had dropped considerably, a hospital insider later disclosed that the initial hours following admission were crucial. Thankfully, there was no need for surgery because the bleeding was stopped.

Shreyas Iyer was responding favorably to treatment, and the BCCI formally confirmed that his condition had stabilized. The board also mentioned that experts in Sydney and India will continue to be consulted over Shreyas Iyer progress.

Ahead of the Canberra series opener, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav talked candidly about Iyer’s health. Doctors advise against any physical contact or strain to prevent rebleeding after a spleen damage, which typically necessitates 6–12 weeks of rest. Shreyas Iyer health is still improving, but it is anticipated that he would miss India’s forthcoming November–December ODI series against South Africa. His ability to play in the home series against New Zealand in early 2026 is also up in the air, pending the outcome of his recuperation.
