Shreyas Iyer grabbed his rib cage in agony as he made a catch while sprinting backwards from point to dismiss Alex Carey. The 30-year-old left the field right away and didn’t come back for the rest of the game. Emergency surgery was required when further tests at a hospital in Sydney showed abdominal bleeding and a shattered spleen.

Medical experts in Australia and India expressed happiness with Iyer’s progress, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed in a statement on November 1 that he had been released from a hospital in Sydney. The Board also disclosed that Rizwan Khan, Iyer’s team physician, stayed with Shreyas Iyer during his hospital stay in Sydney to supervise his care and recuperation.
