Sherfane Rutherford, an all-rounder for the West Indies, was successfully traded from the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the Mumbai Indians (MI) for the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Rutherford will transfer to MI at his current rate after being purchased by GT for INR 2.6 crore.
Sherfane Rutherford, who has played in 44 Twenty20 Internationals for the West Indies, owns the record for the best sixth-wicket partnership in T20Is after he and Andre Russell put up a 139-run partnership in Perth against Australia.
After playing for the Delhi Capitals in 2019 and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022, Sherfane Rutherford has now participated in 23 IPL games.
Despite being a member of the MI team in 2020 and the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, he was not included in the starting lineup for either team.
The Guyanese cricketer, however, faced a reckoning in 2025, as he participated in nearly every league match for the Gujarat Titans. During the 2025 season, when the top-order troika of Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler scored the majority of GT’s runs, Rutherford scored 291 runs at an average of 32.33 and a strike-rate of 157.29 in 11 innings of batting.
The five-time champions have announced Sherfane Rutherford as their second trade in advance of the 2026 big championship. Additionally, on Thursday, the team stated that it would acquire all-rounder Shardul Thakur from the Lucknow Super Giants. Shardul paid INR 2 crore to join the Mumbai-based team in an all-cash transaction, much like Rutherford did.
For the 2026 season, the trade window will conclude on November 15 at 5:00 PM. The clubs will then spend the next several days getting ready for the December 27 IPL auctions. Teams can choose to keep most of their core roster in order to facilitate a smooth transition into the upcoming season, since the event will function as a mini-auction.
