In Match 2 of the World Championship of Legends 2025 between the South African and West Indies champions, Sheldon Cottrell put on his shooting boots and caught Sarel Erwee short of his crease. During South Africa’s run-chase of 81, Erwee looked set at the crease with Jean-Paul Duminy and had to step back for an 18-ball 27.
When Sheldon Cottrell bowled a delivery that angled into Duminy’s pads, the series of events began.
All the southpaw could muster was an inside edge that bounced off his pads and went off sideways. In order to run Erwee out, Sheldon Cottrell quickly changed his course from his initial follow-through to head for the ball and release the ball off the inside of his right foot.

The AB de Villiers-led team won by a bowl-out as the Proteas fell one run short of the DLS mark after their allotted 11 overs, putting the West Indies champions on the losing side. Rain caused the match at Edgbaston to be postponed, and it was eventually reduced to an 11-overs-a-side affair.
Wayne Parnell and JJ Smuts both scored for South Africa during the bowl-out. The opposition’s initial three tries were all very close chances, including Cottrell’s. Nevertheless, South Africa was proclaimed the winners after the fourth ball missed.
For his undefeated 12-ball 25, which included one four and a pair of sixes, Duminy was named Player of the Match. Cottrell finished with a pitiful 2/16 in three overs. South Africa’s star player with the ball was Aaron Phangiso. In his first two overs, the left-arm spinner let up just 19 runs while taking a few wickets.
