Sharmar Joseph record spell, Steve Smith's accomplishment, and other statistics from Australia vs. West Indies, 2nd Test Stats Review

leveling the series at 1-1 thanks to the potent batting of Kavem Hodge and Joshua Da Silva and Sharmar Joseph’s brilliant 7/68 , West Indies defeated Australia by eight runs at the Gabba in Brisbane,

After winning the toss, West Indies chose to bat, but they got off to a rough start. They were suffering at 64/5 after losing captain Kraigg Brathwaite for only four runs, then losing a number of wickets. But Da Silva and Kavem Hodge saved the day with an incredible 149-run combination. Da Silva made it to fifty before getting out for seventy-one, and Hodge made it to seventy-nine before leaving. With important contributions of 50 and 32 from Kevin Sinclair and Alzarri Joseph, the visitors were able to record a solid 311/10 in their opening innings.

Australia, on the other hand, got off to a slow start after losing Steve Smith for only six runs. They soon found themselves at 54/5, but Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja rallied with a vital 96-run partnership. After scoring 65 runs off of just 49 balls, Carey was out of the game, but Pat Cummins and Usman Khawaja held the opposition scoreless with an 81-run partnership for the eighth wicket. After all, Khawaja left at 75, while Cummins was still undefeated at 64. After Nathan Lyon was out for 19 runs, Australia proclaimed their innings to be over at 289/9.

With a 22-run lead going into the second inning, West Indies faltered and were finally bowled out for 193. The other batters struggled, but Kirk McKenzie (41), Alick Athanaze (35), Kavem Hodge (29), and Justin Greaves (33) made significant contributions. With three wickets apiece, Lyon and Josh Hazlewood were the most productive bowlers.

Australia’s response depended on Smith’s flawless 91 and Cameron Green’s 42, but the other batsmen were unable to muster much of an impact. In the end, West Indies prevailed by a final score of eight runs.

With seven wickets at a cost of 68 runs, Sharmar Joseph was the most impressive bowler and was duly named Player of the Match. West Indies tie the series 1-1 with this victory.

In the interim, the following significant figures and data from Australia’s second Test against the West Indies are presented:

1 – Australia suffered their first defeat in a day-night test.

3- Travis Head joined Adam Gilchrist and Ryan Harris as the only other Australians to score ducks in both innings of a Test.

51 – Nathan Lyon (51 wickets) joined Shane Warne (68 wickets) and Glenn McGrath (65 wickets) as the third bowler at the Gabba to reach 50+ Test wickets.

2 – Pat Cummins joined South Africa’s Shaun Pollock as the second skipper to score fifty or more runs against the West Indies while batting at No. 9 or below. Pollock’s achievement occurred in Bridgetown in 2001.

353 – Mitchell Starc became the fifth bowler from Australia to reach 350 wickets in Test cricket.

16069 – In all game formats, Steve Smith scored 16,000 runs.

383 – Smith surpassed Ricky Ponting (386) to become the fastest Australian player to reach 16,000 runs in an international cricket match.

3 – In day/night Test matches, Shamar Joseph is the third player from the West Indies to take five wickets in an innings. In the 2016 match against Pakistan, Devendra Bishoo scored 8/49, and in the 2018 match against Sri Lanka, Jason Holder scored 5/41.

1. The West Indies are the first foreign team to triumph in an Australian day-night Test match.

54 – Nathan Lyon finished with 54 wickets in the Test against the West Indies.

4–Shamar Joseph (7/68) joins Curtly Ambrose (7/25) in 1993, Gerry Gomez (7/55) in 1952, and Andy Roberts (7/54) in 1975 as the only other West Indies bowler to take seven wickets in an innings in Australia.

27 – After 27 years, the West Indies won a Test match in Australia.
