After the 2025 Indian Premier League, former cricketer R Ashwin recently recounted being duped into giving Virat Kohli his phone number. The incident was made public after a humorous story about a Chhattisgarh man surfaced.
Cricket greats like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers started calling Manish Bisi after he bought a SIM card that had once belonged to Rajat Patidar. He initially believed it to be a glitch in the system, but the voices on the other end were real. R Ashwin went on to say that during the confusion, a prankster who was pretending to be his CSK teammate Devon Conway nearly tricked him.
“Hello buddy, how are you?'” a man posing as Devon Conway messaged me after the IPL concluded. then I added, “We’ll keep in touch.” You’re playing in MLC; I’ll watch the games.’ Then he said, “Can you share Virat Kohli’s number with me? I’ve lost it.” Why is he requesting Virat’s number, I wondered? I didn’t want Devon Conway to think I was asking him, but I felt I should.
On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, “I then selected Virat Kohli’s card and gave him a different number.”
“He said, ‘I’ve lost a couple more numbers,’ after I presented it. He replied, “Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni,” when I enquired whose numbers they were. I became suspicious and believed someone was pulling a practical joke. “I gave you a bat this year. How is that bat doing?” I then asked him. I hadn’t even given him a bat, yet he claimed it was fantastic. I immediately blocked him after he lied.
The man risked it. When I returned to the CSK group and looked up Devon Conway’s number, it had changed. At least I was smart enough to mail Virat’s duplicate card. In Australia, it was his WhatsApp number. Fortunately, he was requesting everyone’s phone numbers,” R Ashwin continued.
Recently, R Ashwin featured in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 for Dindigul Dragons, guiding the team to the finals, where they finished as runners-up.
