After a difficult fiscal year for the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), the Shane Warne Stand, one of the iconic buildings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), may undergo major renovations. This development follows the club’s record-breaking attendance numbers and debt-free status.
The MCC, which is in charge of overseeing the MCG, announced a USD 32.1 million net profit for the fiscal year that ends in March 2024. Due to its outstanding financial performance, the club was able to pay off its outstanding debt from the renovation of the Northern Stand two years ahead of schedule, giving it the opportunity to plan for more stadium improvements. Stuart Fox, chief executive of the MCC, ascribed the financial success to a number of causes, chief among them being the extraordinary turnout for the AFL.
Fox stated, as cited by WA Today, “These shows, eighteen months in the making, delivered beyond expectations.”
The MCC is currently focussing on possible upgrades, such as the renovation of the old Shane Warne Stand, thanks to its solid financial standing. Although a feasibility assessment has been carried out, Fox stressed that the investigation is still ongoing and no decisions have been taken as of yet.

Collaboration between the MCC, the Victorian government, and major sports leagues like the AFL and Cricket Australia is necessary for the potentially difficult redevelopment. Regarding the club’s financial situation, MCC President Fred Oldfield offered his thoughts.

“The MCG is an ageing facility, so we need to keep making improvements to make sure it is a top-tier international site. The club has worked with the MCG Trust and the state government to create a business case that will investigate other possibilities for the Shane Warne Stand’s future. We may now potentially contribute to additional stadium upgrades and potential stand redevelopments because of our current financial situation, Oldfield stated.
