Kabul: January 17, 2024: Shane McDermott is officially named the new fielding coach of the Afghanistan national team, according to confirmation from the Afghanistan Cricket Board. On February 1, Shane McDermott is scheduled to join the team for Afghanistan’s all-format tour of Sri Lanka. He has had numerous positions with cricket teams in Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Tasmania, and Western Australia Cricket Association.
He recently started working as the assistant fielding coach for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in 2022. He also worked in the same role for three years, from 2019 to 2021, with the Sri Lankan Senior Men’s team. During that time, he led the Sri Lanka A squad as head coach.
With a lot of experience, Shane McDermott holds a High-Performance Level Three Coaching Certificate.
Prior to his assignments with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, McDermott was employed from 2012 to 2019 at Cricket Australia’s National Cricket Centre as the Interim National A Team analyst and Fielding Coach as well as the Interim National Team Assistant/Fielding Coach. He also contributed to coaching setups for recent ICC tournaments, such as the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the 2022 and 2021 ICC Men’s T20I World Cups.
Andrew Puttick has been named the new batting coach for the Afghanistan national team by the Afghanistan Cricket Board. In addition, the ACB anticipates filling the two recently announced open jobs with a Performance Analyst and an S&C Trainer.
Speaking of the Afghanistan team, they played India in a three-match Twenty20 International series and lost handily, 0-3. Before the decisive game at Chinnaswamy, which had several surprises and drama for both teams, the Afghans were behind 0–2. The two sides played two Super Overs to settle the score after squaring the scores.
