Reports: Mohammed Shami to prioritise Champions Trophy, IPL 2025 over BGT return

Mohammed Shami may put the Champions Trophy and IPL 2025 ahead of the Border-Gavaskar trophy when he returns, according to a BCCI source. Following a horrific ankle injury, the seam bowling sensation recently returned to competitive cricket.

The third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will start on Saturday, December 14 at the Gabba in Brisbane. Previous events suggested that Shami would be making a comeback to international cricket following the series’ fourth Test. However, it appears that his trip has been cancelled.

When the 34-year-old last appeared, he performed admirably at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

In nine games, Shami took 11 wickets at an economy rate of 7.85 and an average of 25.36.

“It appears that the swelling comes and goes. Due to his own desire to play more domestic cricket, it is likely that he will return to play for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins on December 21. According to the source, who was cited by NDTV Sports, “He can bowl at least three spells and 10 overs per game.”

“Shami’s career is nearing its business end. What if, after a prolonged period, his knee starts to malfunction in Australia? It will be difficult for him to field. He had ankle surgery, so he missed the most recent IPL. He has a big deal with SRH this time, at Rs 10 crore. If he wishes to keep himself in white ball format for the time being, you can’t blame him,” the source continued.

Shami is likely the greatest judge of himself and can therefore assess if he can make a comeback in Australia, even though the team may need him back in red-ball cricket. The 2023 World Cup final vs Australia in Ahmedabad was Shami’s final international cricket match.
