Mohammed Shami‘s future and chances of returning to the international cricket arena have reportedly been discussed by a representative of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Notably, Shami, who was born in Amroha, last played for the Men in Blue in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, where he claimed nine wickets in five games against eight other teams.
Shami’s recent lacklustre performance for East Zone in their quarterfinal matchup versus North Zone in Bengaluru was highlighted by the official. In 34 overs, Shami’s final numbers were 1/136 (1/100 in 23 overs and 0/36 in 11 overs). The official also emphasised important factors including age and tempo. He also discussed what the Indian Premier League’s right-arm pacer needs to do to be competitive.
It’s becoming more and more difficult for Shami to rejoin the Indian squad at this time. “Aside from one strange spell, he wasn’t very impressive in the Duleep game either,” the BCCI official said, as reported by The Telegraph.
In addition, he isn’t getting any younger, and he didn’t appear to be playing at his best pace in Duleep. However, he must play a respectable number of domestic matches in order to stay in the IPL,” the official continued.
With 24 wickets in just seven games, Shami was the World Cup 2023’s top wicket-taker.
