Mohammed Shami, an Indian senior bowler, will play for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2026 Indian Premier League after a successful transfer from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). At INR 10 crore, Shami was SRH’s second-most costly acquisition prior to the 2025 IPL season.
For the same amount, LSG purchased the Bengal speedster to strengthen their pace attack. With his extensive background, Shami has played in 119 IPL games for five different teams since making his debut in 2013. He was instrumental for the Gujarat Titans (GT), taking 28 wickets in 17 games to earn the Purple Cap in 2023. He had earlier enjoyed another successful season, collecting 20 wickets and helping GT win the title, despite missing the 2024 season due to injury.

His time with SRH did not, however, proceed as expected. After recovering from an injury, Shami struggled to recapture his signature rhythm and took just six wickets in nine games at an average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23. He has now put a lot of effort into improving his form and fitness, and he has shown promise on the domestic circuit for Bengal, taking 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy games this year.
LSG’s all-Indian pace attack in the 2025 Indian Premier League was disappointing since players like Prince Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Akash Deep found it difficult to consistently put pressure on the opposition batsmen. It became clear that the team would look to add players to strengthen their bowling unit in preparation for the upcoming campaign.
Hiring a player with Shami’s level of skill greatly improves their pace unit.
Because of his years of big-stage experience, he not only brings talent and experience to the attack but also crucial instruction to the team’s younger fast bowlers.
All teams are currently finishing their options regarding possible swaps and releases in anticipation of next month’s auction, as the IPL retention deadline is scheduled for November 15.
