Shakib Al Hasan said after Bangladesh's humiliating loss to South Africa, "Will love to finish 5-6 if not in the semis."

On October 24, South Africa and Bangladesh played a game in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where the spectators were treated to some outstanding batting. The ‘Bangla Tigers’ outcome, however, was disappointing as they were defeated by a huge margin of 149 runs. This loss was their fourth straight during the current ODI World Cup 2023.

After deciding to bat first, the Proteas amassed a massive 382/5 in their 50 overs thanks to Quinton de Kock’s stunning 174 off 140. Significant contributions were also made by David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, and Aiden Markram. Mahmudullah scored the first ODI century for Bangladesh in six years in response, but Bangladesh was bowled out for 233 despite the favorable batting conditions.

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, stated that his bowlers performed admirably in the first 25 overs but fell victim to the opposition’s onslaught in the second half of the innings.

“We bowled well in the first 25 overs. They were scoring at around five runs each over when we took three wickets. From there, they continued. Quinton batted exceptionally well, and we were helpless to counter Klaasen’s finish. It can happen on a surface like this, but our bowling could have been better. After Bangladesh’s defeat, Shakib informed the commentators, “We lost the game in the last 10 overs.

We need our top four batters to do well: Hasan Shakib

The legendary all-rounder felt that the top four hitters would improve as the World Cup went on. In addition, he aimed for his side to be fifth or sixth, if not in the top four, in the points standings.

There has been much discussion on the relative batting positions of Mushfiq and Mahmudullah. But in their current capacity, they are excelling. We need our top four batters to do effectively. With so much left to play in this competition, anything is possible. There is much to learn and play for. If not in the semifinals, I’d like to place 5–6. We’re not acting like a team that can win, but Shakib continued, “We hope to finish stronger.
