Shakib Al Hasan plans to retire from all formats following the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, stated on Wednesday that he intends to stop playing all sports after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Shakib Al Hasan stated that he will not continue to captain the team following the 2023 ODI World Cup.

“As far as my international career is concerned, I currently anticipate the ODI format lasting up to the 2025 Champions Trophy. The T20 format is only available till the 2024 World Cup. In terms of the Tests, maybe after the World Cup,” Shakib Al Hasan said on Wednesday when asked about his retirement plans.

He added that he had never desired full control when given the opportunity to skipper the team. “Maybe I will retire from three formats at the same time, and no one can tell about the future but at this moment I have such an idea,” he said.

As far as reality is concerned, I will continue to lead up until the World Cup and then I won’t lead in ODIs. Let me be clear about one thing: I did not realize this kind of problem was going to arise when I resigned as captain on [September] 17th.

The team management and Papan (Nazmul) Bhai indicated they needed me as captain. I concurred, but not for myself, but for the team.

“Life is a lot simpler for me if I’m not the captain. What benefits will captaincy have for my career? It would be simpler for me if I wasn’t the captain. I would bat, be calm, and bowl for 10 overs,” he said.

Tamim Iqbal received criticism from Shakib Al Hasan for his “childish behavior” in creating a fuss over not being included in the World Cup squad. In a news conference, Tamim claimed that BCB’s “dirty game”—not injuries—was the reason he wasn’t selected. Shakib Al Hasan also dismissed rumors that he was behind Tamim’s dismissal from the team, using Mahmudullah as an example, who made it to the World Cup roster despite spending the previous six months without a chance before getting one in the domestic series against New Zealand.

Mahmudullah Riyad bhai was absent, but he unexpectedly joined the World Cup team. I believed he was capable of doing so, but everyone was aware of his commitment to the team, his sense of duty toward it, and his desire to play for it.

There is a distinction, Shakib Al Hasan explained.

“Also, choosing the entire squad is not my duty. If it had been the case, a day before the Asia Cup, I would have been allowed to reveal the team after being named captain. You must go through a variety of procedures, items, and facts in addition to performance. Many factors are considered before selecting the team, including performance on and off the field, the locker room, team meetings, and environment.

Tamim will bat down the order or won’t be selected in the opening game, as I indicated, but I haven’t talked about any of those things, so I’m not sure where the question came from. If that was mentioned, it was probably done by a legitimate individual who was alerting the other party beforehand in the interests of mutual benefit. I don’t see any negative aspects to this. Someone wouldn’t say something like that intentionally do harm, I’m sure of it.

“So is there something wrong with that suggestion if someone made it? Maybe you can’t make a suggestion like that, then. Like you have to say to someone, “You do whatever you want?” When someone says, “It’s my bat, only I will play,” it shows juvenile conduct.

“Anyone should be prepared to play in any position for the benefit of the team. The main priority is the team. It is challenging for me to choose the team when I don’t know whether someone will play in the third game or the seventh game until the morning of the game,” he said.
