Shahid Afridi, the legendary all-rounder from Pakistan, has been named by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the newest Ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in the USA and the West Indies starting on June 1.
Six T20 World Cups have been played, two of which as captain. Afridi led Pakistan to victory in 2009 with a Player of the Match performance in the Lord’s final. He will take part in a number of World Cup-related promotional events and provide knowledgeable commentary in a number of guest columns.
The 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup winner Shahid Afridi stated, “It is an event that is very close to my heart.” Some of my favorite moments in my career have come from participating on this platform, from winning the trophy in 2009 to being named Player of the Tournament in the first edition.
“The T20 World Cup has been growing stronger in the past few years, and I’m excited to be a part of this edition, which promises more teams, matches, and drama than ever before.”
“I am especially looking forward to the June 9 India vs. Pakistan match.” One of the greatest rivalries in sports will take place, and New York will be a suitable venue for this must-see matchup between two elite teams.
“Shahid Afridi competed in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, two of which as captain and delivering a Player of the Match performance when winning the trophy in 2009, so who better to join our all-star Ambassador team,” continued Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager – Marketing and Communications.
In addition to Yuvraj Singh, eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, and other well-known fans worldwide, he will be bringing the event closer to the public ahead of what is expected to be the largest T20 World Cup ever.

The first match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas on June 1–29, with co-hosts USA against Canada. Twenty teams will compete in a total of 55 matches spread over nine venues, leading up to the largest-ever cricket carnival spectacle—the final—which will take place in Barbados on June 29.
Ten teams from eight matches in New York will compete in the historic opening match between 2014 champions Sri Lanka and South Africa on June 3rd at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
