In advance of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s star fast bowler, is said to have turned down the chance to take on the role of vice captain for his country. The choice has sparked rumors about Afridi and the Pakistan Cricket Board having a tense relationship (PCB).
The PCB selection committee had originally intended to appoint Afridi as Babar Azam’s deputy for the major event, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo. The 24-year-old speedster, though, turned down the offer, therefore for the time being the team does not have an official vice-captain.
This happened only a few weeks after Afridi, who led Pakistan in just one series, was stripped of the T20 captaincy. Even though the gifted pacer had publicly moved on from the event, it’s thought that he still feels unfairly treated.
PCB also gave Muhammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan consideration for the position.
According to sources, Shaheen Afridi believed he was never given a clear explanation of the reasons behind his captaincy dismissal.
He was hesitant to get into another leadership post right away after being removed with grace from his previous one.
Afridi’s probable replacement as captain had already been alluded to by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, which prompted the board to issue a public statement containing remarks about Afridi that he later denied having made.
Afridi is an important member of Pakistan’s T20 team, hence his decision to decline an official leadership position is noteworthy. Shadab Khan and Muhammad Rizwan were allegedly additional options that the PCB had taken into consideration before deciding not to name an official vice-captain for the time being.
