Sean Williams, an all-rounder for Zimbabwe, has chosen to come out of his T20I retirement and has been selected to play in the three-match series against Sri Lanka, which begins this afternoon at Harare Sports Club. Williams had declared his retirement from the shorter format during last year’s Bangladeshi away trip for Zimbabwe. The fifth and final Twenty20 International of that series, which Zimbabwe won by eight wickets, was his final appearance.
With an outstanding record of 81 games, 1,691 runs at an average of 23.48, 11 half-centuries, and a high score of 66, the 37-year-old will start his international T20 career. Since his debut against Bangladesh at Khulna in November 2006, he has taken 38 wickets with the ball, with best figures of 3/15.
Sean Williams’ return was hailed by Zimbabwe T20I skipper Sikandar Raza, who said that the Chevrons dugout would greatly benefit from his experience and Brendan Taylor’s participation in the squad. Raza, who was just named the top ODI all-rounder, claimed that he spoke with Sean Williams about the call and that things were resolved in the end.
Naturally, it’s good to see Sean Williams again.
We spoke about this a few months ago. “This is an opportunity to get to the World Cup,” Sean Williams and I discussed in our one-on-one conversation during the Test matches. According to Raza, who was cited by News Day, “You just have to decide for yourself and your family.”
After considerable consideration, Willow concluded he was ready. You must examine his workload. Willow is a versatile player who has participated in every Zimbabwean game. He must weigh all of his possibilities, including his degree of fitness and time away from his family. The Zimbabwean captain continued, “We’re very blessed and happy that Willow is back. He decided to come back after talking to his family and the people he trusts.”
Zimbabwe is certain they will have a thrilling Twenty20 match.
Despite losing out on victories in both games of the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe showed promise. Raza stated that he hopes his squad can maintain that form into the Twenty20 Internationals and that he is inspired by their performances. Charith Asalanka, the captain of Sri Lanka, stated that he expects a difficult series at Harare Sports Club and acknowledged the threat posed by the hosts.
“I firmly think that the entire process falls away from you once you begin to focus on the outcome. I believed that we should be quite confident going into another thrilling T20 series against Sri Lanka based on the manner we bowled, batted, and fielded in the ODI series,” Raza added.
They will be very difficult for us, in my opinion, given that they are also utilising this tour to get ready for the qualifiers. The Zimbabwean team has a few young players, and I predict a fun and difficult Twenty20 series. The Sri Lankan captain stated, “We just want to do our fundamentals really well.”
