The 16-man Zimbabwean squad for the three-match Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka includes Sean Williams. In May 2024, the seasoned campaigner made his most recent appearance in a T20I. The start date of the series is set for Wednesday, September 3.
Craig Ervine was replaced by Sean Williams as captain of the ODI team in the just finished two-match series.
Ervine sustained a persistent and recurrent Grade I strain in his right calf in addition to a Grade II strain in his left. In the first and second One-Day Internationals, he bowled 1/26 and 0/35 and scored 57 and 20, respectively.
The unit directed by Sikandar Raza now includes Brendan Taylor as well. After almost four years in the Test and ODI formats, Taylor just returned to the international scene. The tri-series team against South Africa and New Zealand is missing four key players: Vincent Masekesa, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Wessly Madhevere, and Newman Nyamhuri.
For Zimbabwe, the forthcoming three-match series will be an essential prelude to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. Next year, just two of the Africa Qualifier’s teams will advance to the T20 World Cup.
The Chevrons lost the first ODI by seven runs and the second by five wickets in a fiercely contested 50-over series. The hosts lost both games even though some players played well.
The Harare Sports Club in Harare hosted the one-day leg, and the T20Is will take place there as well. After the current series is over, Sri Lanka will go to the United Arab Emirates for the forthcoming Asia Cup.
