‘I think he’s a short-term solution,’ says Scott Styris of India skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

"I don't think Gambhir has a natural captain among the players that he has right now," stated Styris.

'I think he's a short-term solution,' says Scott Styris of India skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

The BCCI, or Board of Control for Cricket in India, recently declared that the current white-ball series between Sri Lanka and India’s T20I team will be captained by superstar batsman Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar Yadav was named the shortest format captain when Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of the Indian team, took over.

Scott Styris, a former cricket player from New Zealand, believes that Suryakumar Yadav is only an immediate solution for India and that Gautam Gambhir is considering Shubman Gill to be India’s long-term captain.

Shubman Gill was named vice captain for both the T20I and ODI teams against Sri Lanka, which is noteworthy. Gill’s appointment, according to Styris, has India searching for a long-term solution.

He seems like a temporary solution to me. Among the players that Gambhir now has, I don’t think he has a natural captain. He is buying himself some time when it comes to deciding who will be the next long-term captain for India. Gill, for example, is probably capable of leading the team for ten years, but he isn’t quite ready yet, so Scott Styris was cited by NDTV as saying.

It’s an extremely smart choice, in my opinion: Scott Styris

Remarkably, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Test and ODI teams, is 37 years old, while Suryakumar Yadav is only 33. It’s obvious that when it comes to captaincy, Gautam Gambhir and company will search for a long-term solution. Suryakumar Yadav, despite his advanced age, might end up captaining India in the 2026 T20 World Cup, according to Scott Styris, with the Men in Blue seeking a replacement skipper later on.

“SKY might captain the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup if he performs well enough. After then, you might consider Gill or any other available possibilities. However, Styris stated, “I think it’s a really smart decision.”
