Scott Edwards

Match 34 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between the Netherlands and Afghanistan takes place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, November 4. Scott Edwards, the captain of the Netherlands, decided to bat first after winning the toss. The Dutch were 73/1 in the 12th over and were looking good, but they quickly collapsed and were reduced to 97/5.

Captain Scott Edwards was run out against Muhammad Nabi, and he was also out for a golden duck.

Fans, however, were perplexed and wondered why Edwards was run out rather than stumped after being declared out. Notably, the Dutch skipper was adjudged run out rather than stumped because he moved forward a little after being hit by Nabi.

The Netherlands collapsed badly after losing their captain and were reduced to 113/6 very fast. The scoreboard continued to rise as Sybrand Engelbrecht (58 off 86) maintained one end. But in the 35th over, he was removed, and the Dutch were eventually bowled out for 179. The standout bowler for Afghanistan was Mohammad Nabi, who finished with scores of 3/28 in 9.1 overs. Noor Ahmad (2/31, 9 overs) also claimed two wickets.

In Afghanistan’s run chase, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi both scored half-centuries.

Afghanistan lost their opener, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10 off 11), cheaply in the second innings, and after 5.3 overs, they were down to 27/1. Ibrahim Zadran, his partner (20 off 34), was also easily dismissed, finishing on 55/2 for his team. Rahmat Shah (52 off 54) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (56* off 64) engaged in a 74-run partnership for the third wicket to steady the score following the early blows.

Saqib Zulfiqar ended their alliance when he dismissed Shah in the twenty-third over. But it was too little, too late for the Dutch, as their team won the match by seven wickets and reached home in only 31.3 overs thanks to another 52-run partnership between Azmatullah Omarzai (31* off 28) and captain Shahidi.
