On August 6, Saudi Cricket Federation Chairman Prince Saud Al Mishal Al Saud and Ambassador Ameer Ajwad of Sri Lanka met at the latter’s home in Riyadh.
This meeting, which took place on the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, was a significant turning point in the sporting relationship between the two countries.
Using cricket to improve people-to-people ties between Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka was the topic of conversation between Ambassador Ajwad and Prince Al Saud. This year, as both countries commemorate fifty years of diplomatic ties, they put special emphasis on fortifying their relationship via sports diplomacy.

Sri Lanka will be a major factor in Saudi Arabia’s cricket promotion
During the discussions, Ambassador Ajwad offered a creative suggestion to mark the diplomatic achievement: the two nations should host a friendly cricket match. Various topics of bilateral collaboration in cricket promotion were discussed during the conference.

As Saudi Arabia looks to expand its cricketing infrastructure and talent pool, this offer of assistance and knowledge transfer may prove to be significant. Key officials from both sides were present, underscoring the significance of this encounter. Together with Ambassador Ajwad were Mr Tariq Saga, CEO, and Mr. Nawaf Alothaibi, Vice Chairman of the Saudi Cricket Federation; Prince Al Saud was also there. Mr. Anas is the Minister and Head of Chancery of the Sri Lankan Embassy.
