Sanju Samson’s selection debate addressed by ex-India batter

“If Sanju Samson were playing, there would be no confusion, but with Shubman Gill as vice-captain playing all matches, Samson appears marginalized," observed Kaif.

Sanju Samson’s selection debate addressed by ex-India batter

According to former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif, Sanju Samson may have lost his position as an opener since India is preparing Shubman Gill to be the team’s next captain in the shorter formats. During the Asia Cup earlier this year, Gill was named vice-captain of the T20I team, indicating the team management’s long-term goals for his leadership position.

Gill’s place in every T20I match became virtually guaranteed once he was elevated to vice-captain. Sanju Samson was forced out of his favorite place to make room for him at the top of the order. Sanju Samson was having a great run of form prior to the rearrangement, but Gill’s performance in the shorter formats has been patchy.

Sanju Samson has an outstanding record with a strike rate of about 150.

“There wouldn’t be any doubt if Sanju Samson were playing, but since Shubman Gill is the vice captain and plays in every game, Sanju Samson appears to be sidelined. Jitesh Sharma benefits from the perception that he is a superior finisher at number five or six compared to Sanju. However, Sanju has lost his place since Gill is being developed as a future player and captain. However, they are now supporting players based on their batting position,” Kaif stated on his YouTube account.

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian opener, blasted the team’s management for their ambiguous handling of Samson’s drop from the starting position after Gill arrived and his subsequent omission from the starting lineup.

The most pressing question is: What have we concluded with Sanju Samson? One of the biggest questions about why we are performing that way is why Sanju isn’t playing. He performed fairly well as well when we played Sanju. He wasn’t doing particularly well, but he was alright. Chopra posted on his YouTube channel, “You forced him to bat higher in the order against Oman, and he hit a fifty.”

After batting at No. 3 and being out for just two runs in the second Twenty20 International match against Australia, Sanju Samson was dropped.
