'We could not adapt to the home conditions' - Sanjay Bangar says of Punjab Kings' dismal IPL 2024 campaign

With just five wins from their 14 games, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) finished in ninth place in the rankings, making the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season one to forget. Sanjay Bangar, the head coach of PBKS, thought back on his team’s mistakes as the season came to an end.

In their final league encounter of the season, PBKS lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by four wickets, which summed up their problems. After an inconsistent season, they were left with a depressing 10 points.

Sanjay Bangar stated that the primary concern was PBKS’s failure to triumph at their home stadium in Mullanpur. “We were unable to adjust to our surroundings at home. We were victorious in four of the seven away games, but we were only able to win one of the seven games at home. At the press conference following the game, Bangar stated, “So, if a team has to advance in a tournament, that is definitely a worrying aspect.”

We suffered defeats in two close games: Sanjay Bangar

A difficult period for PBKS occurred in the middle of the season when they dropped two close games and four straight home games. The two close games we lost, the four games we lost back-to-back during the middle of the season, and all of their home games hurt us. at some close games, we were unable to prevail at the pivotal moments. It’s always difficult if there are a lot of tasks left for the latter part of the season, he continued.

Though Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, and Ashutosh Sharma are young Indian batters for PBKS, the former Indian batter did draw some encouragement from their exploits. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the departure of foreign players like Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone had a significant impact on the team.

The biggest pluses for us in terms of our season’s batting department, he continued, “are the performances of the domestic batsmen Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, and Ashutosh Sharma.”

When we attended the auction, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) promised that all of the players would be available. Simply put, there are a number of reasons why the tournament was, in fact, somewhat extended. Although everyone was in the same situation, we lost those English players,” he said.

Bangar clarified that their poor season is not only due to the injuries, even though they were a concern. If PBKS hopes to challenge for the 2025 IPL championship, they will need to start over and figure out how to replicate their performance on the road.
