Sanath Jayasuriya compared Sri Lanka's victories in the Oval Tests in 1998 and 2024

Although there have been many memorable events in Sri Lankan cricket history, few have been as legendary as the team’s victory over England in 1998 at the Oval. In the first innings of the 1998 Sri Lankan cricket match.

In addition, Sanath Jayasuriya was Sri Lanka’s acting coach during the team’s most recent eight-wicket victory over England in the third Test of the recently finished series at the Oval.

It is important to remember that, in contrast to Sri Lanka’s victory in 1998, things were very different this time around. On a green track, the visitors triumphed over England despite the cold and overcast weather. In reference to the same topic, Jayasuriya contrasted Sri Lanka’s 1998 victory at the Oval with that of 2024.

“We won here, under Arjuna [Ranatunga], around 27 years ago. Sanath Jayasuriya was cited as stating, “Murali [Muthiah Muralidaran] got about 16 wickets; I got a double-hundred; Aravinda [de Silva] got a 150; it’s a place we’ll never forget—The Oval.”

Former player Sanath Jayasuriya made 213 runs off 278 balls, which went a long way towards helping his country win.

“However, these individuals played in completely different environments. The grass and the weather were harsh; it was chilly and overcast all around. These boys deserve all the praise. He said, “The batters assumed responsibility in the second innings, and the fielders fielded effectively.

It’s important to remember that Sri Lanka tried to minimise their deficit by scoring 263 runs in response to England’s 325 runs lost in the opening innings of the third Test. In the second innings, the visitors turned the tide of the match by dismissing England for 156 runs, setting themselves a 219-run victory mark.

Pathum Nissanka led the team in the second innings with 127* runs, and Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews followed with scores of 39 and 32* runs, respectively, as Sri Lanka won by eight wickets.

Because of the conditions here, we decided to go with four fast bowlers for the first time. All of them gave it their all, and it’s enjoyable to talk about them. Our bowling in the second innings was outstanding; they bowled them out in less than 35 overs, all for a little over 150, according to Jayasuriya.
