Sam Curran intends to use the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as a platform to help him achieve his goal of rejoining the England squad. After being bought by the five-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at a mega-auction last year for INR 2.40 crore, the seam-bowling all-rounder has rejoined the team.
Since making his England debut in 2018, Curran has participated in 24 Test matches, 35 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. After England advanced far in the international competition, he was named the 2022 T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament. But it was on the Caribbean tour in November 2024 that he made his final appearance for the national team.
When England announced their 2025 Champions Trophy squad, Sam Curran was left out.
Jos Buttler gave up his leadership after the European team lost in the group stage. Sam Curran is optimistic that there will be many opportunities available, as Brendon McCullum will take over as England’s coach in all formats from the beginning of this year and a new white-ball captain will be named soon after Jos Buttler exit. He is aware that a successful stay with the Super Kings could help him win over McCullum and regain his place in the running for a recall to the national squad.
“I think my primary goal is simply to rejoin the (England white-ball) team. I suppose I’ve never really found the ideal job with England. There was no denying that they stacked the batting in the Champions Trophy and the series in India (beginning in 2025) by playing a large number of batters and those extra quicks. Who knows what will happen now, but I feel like I’ll get back into it if I get my position with England right. There’s no denying the cliche that “I need to keep getting runs and wickets,” Curran stated on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
“I’m in a great place right now. Although I was obviously devastated when it occurred, I feel like I’ve grown up enough to handle difficult situations. I sincerely hope I can rejoin the team now that I have a little more experience and can read situations better. “There is only one way to do that,” he continued. “Hopefully, I can have a fantastic IPL and see where we are come summertime.
