After almost six years of leading the Kent County Cricket Club, Sam Billings has resigned as captain. The English cricket player, whose contract with Kent runs through the end of 2025, has already relinquished the captaincy and will now do the same with the T20 squad.
After succeeding Sam Northeast in 2018, Sam Billings guided Kent to promotion from Division Two in his debut season as captain. Despite the team’s failure to advance past the group stage in the previous two T20 seasons, he served as the team’s captain during their success in the 2021 Vitality Blast.
Sam Billings has expressed his gratitude to the team management following his choice to leave the post of leadership.
It has been a tremendous honor to serve as this wonderful club’s captain. It has been incredibly special to follow in the footsteps of so many wonderful captains throughout the years. I want to have left the club in a stronger position and advanced the cause.
“Special gratitude must be extended to Paul Downton for the constant encouragement and counsel he provided throughout. We set out with three specific goals in mind: to develop England players, win trophies, and play Division One cricket. This was in addition to Paul and Matt Walker. Sam Billings, who has played 65 white-ball matches and three tests for England, elected not to play in the 2023 Indian Premier League in order to concentrate on Kent’s next County Championship campaign.
