Salma Khatun Makes History in Bangladesh Cricket

Salma Khatun, the former captain of Bangladesh, was the first female selector in the country. In the senior women’s selection panel, she teams up with Sazzad Ahmed. Since Bangladesh is making last-minute preparations for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, which begins on September 30, Salma Khatun won’t have time to adjust to her new role.

Salma Khatun will want to closely monitor the players’ performances in the main event, even if the squad has already been revealed. Despite being in a difficult group, the Bangladesh men’s squad has recently shown some encouraging results, even making it to the Super Fours of the 2025 Asia Cup. In the upcoming years, Khatun hopes to lead the Bangladesh women’s team to even greater glory.

Salma Khatun, who was born in Khulna, served as the inaugural captain of the Bangladesh women’s team.

In 18 ODIs and 65 T20Is, she captained Bangladesh. In 2014 and 2015, she topped the T20I cricket bowlers rankings. With an average of 18.57 and her best figures of 4/6 against Sri Lanka, she took 84 wickets with her off-spin bowling in the shortest format.

“Having someone like Salma Khatun engaged will greatly assist women’s cricket, thus I think our [BCB] president [Aminul Islam] made a groundbreaking move. According to Iftekhar Rahman, the chairman of the BCB’s media committee, this is the first time such an appointment has been made in Bangladesh.

Hasibul Hossain has also been elevated by the board to the senior men’s selection panel. He will accompany Abdur Razzak and Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the primary selector. Since Hannan Sarkar resigned from the office in February of this year, the third position has been unfilled.

Hasibul, a former seamer, represented Bangladesh in 32 ODIs and five Test matches. In addition to playing in the historic leg-bye that helped Bangladesh win the 1997 ICC Trophy final, he represented the Tigers in their first Test match against India in 2000.

On October 2, Bangladesh will play Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to kick off their Women’s World Cup campaign. On September 25 and 27, respectively, the Nigar Sultana-led team will play two warm-up matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka before to this match.
